Life and Service in Chaffee County
"The fall of 1986 was the beginning of my life in Chaffee County, when I was fortunate to be transferred here with Kraft Food Service. My two daughters benefited from growing up in our amazing county and graduated from Salida High School. In January 1988, I was honored to be seated as a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian Church. Later that summer I was invited to join the Vaqueros with the Salida Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce. As a member to this day I enjoy the rewards of assisting new businesses to succeed in our community. I was then encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the Salida Planning and Zoning Commission, and 8 years serving on that Board pushed my public service life into full speed.
In 1990 Jack DeFarge offered me a partnership in Mountain Sport Haus, Mountain Sports Travel, and Whitewater Voyageurs. I became the sole owner in 1995 when Jack retired. That same year Jeff Snyder asked me to assist in forming a 501C3 to create the Salida Housing Development Corporation and pursue funding for an affordable apartment housing project. The results of those efforts were achieved in 1997 when Riverbend Apartments opened with full occupancy and have remained full to this day.
In 1997 I moved to Poncha Springs and served on the Town's Planning and Zoning Commission for 5 years as well as a Town Trustee for 4 years. The same year I was asked to serve on the Chaffee County Fair Board, which I eagerly accepted and remain on the Board to this day. Growing up in Iowa agriculture, animal and the traditions of rural life brings endless rewards and challenges I enjoy and want to preserve.
I presently serve on the County Planning Commission. Public service will always be a large part of my life, and I look forward to serving the citizens of Chaffee County as the next County Commissioner for District 3. My commitment is to be accessible, listen to all, and base decisions on finding common ground for the benefit of the entire county."
